About Equine Rehabilitation

What is Equine Rehabilitation?

Dr. Gravelle is now certified in Equine Rehabilitation through Chi University ! She will

be partnering with Westwood in Fredericksburg, VA to assist horses in their recovery

after an injury .

Equine rehabilitation is a multi-faceted process aimed at ensuring safe recovery after

injury, illness, or a period of inactivity. It combines medical care, structured exercise,

management changes and behavioral support, all tailored to the unique needs of each

horse.

Proper rehabilitation is needed for a horse to return to work after an injury. Core

exercises, balance pads, laser therapy, proprioception stimulation and infrared therapy

are all offered to help improve your horses recovery.

Dr. Gravelle also highly recommends acupuncture and spinal manipulation to help

speed recovery. Her holistic approach to bring body and mind of the horses together to

offer pain relief as well as balancing their physiological and emotional needs.

Four Seasons Equine Veterinary Service is partnering with Westwood Stables to open a

Equine Rehabilitation Facility to recover horses after injuries. The rehabilitation focuses

on sports medicine injuries, but will see other cases depending on their needs. Besides

sports medicine injuries, other cases include eye injuries, wound care, layup for casting

, eligibility will be on a case by case basis.

The rehabilitation focuses on the well being of the patient and a holistic approach to

bring them back to their normal capabilities so they can live to their greatest potential.

Core work, stretching, exercise will be a main focus of recovery. Similar to human

physical therapy, these practices aim to enhance horses' physical health and

performance by relieving tension, improving circulation, and supporting injury healing. All

these modalities involved, play a pivotal role in the wellness and rehabilitation of horses.

Bodywork will also be offered to enhance the recovery of the equine athlete.Body work

allows for more blood flow which is crucial for muscle recovery and reduces the risk of

injury by ensuring that tissues receive the nutrients and oxygen they need. This results

in relaxed and comfortable horse.

Different packages are available and will be recommended based on the patients’

needs. Please call Eve Lindsay to set up an appointment

Key uses include treating injuries (tendons, ligaments, hooves), managing chronic arthritis, and aiding rehabilitation during stall rest.

Key Uses and Benefits:

  • Rehabilitation & Injury Recovery: Widely used for tendon/ligament injuries, navicular disease, laminitis, abscesses, and bone infections.
  • Pain Management & Muscle Support: Reduces chronic joint stiffness, soreness, and back pain while stimulating muscle contraction and strengthening to fight atrophy in inactive horses.
  • Performance Enhancement: Used for pre-performance, race, or show prep to warm up muscles and improve mobility.

Enhanced Proprioception and Coordination: By forcing the horse to focus on weight

distribution, these pads improve awareness of where they are placing their limbs,

enhancing overall movement.

Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention: They offer a low-impact method to rebuild muscle

and stabilize joints, often used to help with tendon, ligament, or neurological issues.

Mental Relaxation and Reduced Tension: The sensory input can trigger a "rest and

digest" state, reducing anxiety and releasing tension in the back and neck muscles.

Improved Posture and Asymmetry Correction: Pads help identify and correct uneven

weight distribution, encouraging a more balanced, symmetrical, and athletic posture.

Equine core exercises, including stretches and stability work, strengthen the abdominal and back muscles to improve spinal stability, posture, and balance. Key benefits include enhanced athletic performance, improved ability to carry a rider, injury prevention, and rehabilitated spinal health. These exercises promote a "lifted" back, allowing for better engagement of the hindquarters and more efficient movement.

Key Benefits of Equine Core Exercises:

  • Improved Posture and Spinal Stability: Strong core muscles, including the abdominal and multifidus muscles, stabilize the spine, preventing the back from dipping under the rider's weight.
  • Enhanced Athleticism and Performance: Core strength allows the horse to engage the hind-end, raise the back, and improve movement quality.
  • Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation: By reducing strain on limbs and joints, a strong core helps prevent injury, and specific exercises are often used in post-injury rehabilitation.
  • Better Balance and Coordination: Exercises like using balance pads or working on inclines increase the horse's awareness of their body and improve coordination.
  • Relaxation and Reduced "Flight" Mode: Engaging the core and stretching the topline can help horses physically relax, which can also help manage anxious or "flighty" behaviors

Tight muscles and tendons can cause lactic acidosis and increased risk of injury. Luckily, horse solarium therapy provides enhanced metabolism and immune system performance through increased vitamin D3 production. The heat energy that equine light therapy systems generate improves blood circulation and reduces muscle discomfort from lactic acid buildup.

How does it work? Horse solarium modules with light therapy pads target specific muscle groups to get blood flowing and decrease muscle soreness. This helps prevent injury for competitive horses.

Faster Healing of Injuries: Cold saltwater therapy is highly effective for treating tendon

injuries, ligaments, suspensory desmitis, splints, and bowed tendons. It can help

collagen fibers heal in a more organized manner, reducing the risk of re-injury.

Improved Circulation: The cold, pressurized, moving water promotes enhanced blood

flow to the limb, which aids in healing, reduces bruising, and helps clear out cellular

waste products.

Hoof Care and Management: Specialized, lower-temperature spa sessions are used to

treat conditions such as laminitis and abscesses.

Rehabilitation & Injury Prevention: It is widely used to assist in recovery from kissing

spines, hindlimb lameness, and neurological conditions, as well as to prevent future

back pain.

Enhanced Hindquarter Engagement: The hindquarter (HQ) band improves

proprioception, helping horses with asymmetrical movement, poor engagement, or

weak hocks to engage their hind legs.

Dynamic Stability: Unlike static exercises, the system builds strength during movement

(walking, lunging, or riding).

Better Gait Symmetry: Studies show a 4-week program can improve hindlimb symmetry

and spinal stability

Class 3 Laser Therapy

Class 3 Laser Therapy

A class 3 laser, Activet, is available to use during the visit or to rent to be used for long term use.  Laser therapy is used to  reduce pain and inflammation, accelerate healing of damaged tissues, relax muscles and stimulate nerve generation.  It also heals wounds faster than without treatment, reduces joint and muscle pain and alleviates arthritis.
